Undoubtedly, the main attraction of Siem Reap is visiting the Angkor Archaeological Park. However, beyond this, there are so many things to see and do in the town that we were totally surprised. It is a tiny city but with numerous sigthseeing spots and cultural experiences to offer.

Visit a Floating Village at Tonly Sap Lake

Tonly Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia with the main attraction being the floating villages. The fascination with people who live in floating houses, travel to floating schools and eat at floating restaurants is quite an attraction. However, I do have some objections for this kind of sightseeing. Is it normal to those people to be constantly photographed by tourists during their everyday life ? It makes me wonder if all this is real or a made attraction.

What was definitely real was the sunset at the lake. Perfect ! Maybe the best I have even seen …

Shop at the Night Market

I love open markets and Siem Reap is very famous for its night market. By no means, we would miss it ! And we were totally rewarded. There were tons of local handicrafts, souvenirs, Khmer artwork, bags, clothes, jewlery and street local food.

Get a Massage

Sightseeing is great but at the end of the day you end up in a “I don’t feel my  body” state. So why not giving a treat to yourself with a massage ? In Cambodia, like in most countries in South East Asia, you can find very cheap massage, with a lot of options and of great quality.

Attend an Aspara Dance Show

An important part of Cambodian culture is the Apsara dance, a traditional Khmer dance. There are several places in Siem Reap where you can attend a a performance. Usually, these shows are offered as a package combining a (buffet) dinner and a dance spectacle. Of course, we couldn’t miss that and also taking a photo with the Aspara dancers !

Taste Local Cuisine

Local cuisine is very similar to the cuisine of other countries in South East Asia. You can find it anywhere and in most cases it is really tasty.
